Change your attitude, Change your life

“Watch your manner of speech if you wish to develop a peaceful state of mind. Start each day by affirming peaceful, contented and happy attitudes and your days will tend to be pleasant and successful.” –Norman Vincent Peale

There are many things that you can do to change your life. I spend every day working with professionals, college students, and high school students. Helping people understand and achieve success is what I do daily. I read, listen, and view information often to assist the individuals that I assist. There are many things that I have learned as a result of these interactions. First and foremost is that nothing has contributed more to an individual’s achievement than his or her attitude.

We can establish our attitude each morning when we start our day. It is our attitude towards life that determines life’s attitude towards us. We tend to get what we expect. I have witnessed this in my own life and in the lives of others. I know people who start each and every day with a negative attitude. When these people wake up they talk about how long the day is going to be, how they are dreading certain meetings, and how they dislike certain people.  These individuals are depositing negative thoughts in their brains to start and take throughout the day. It’s as if they want the day to go bad. And yet these same people are surprised when they receive negative results.

If you are interested in changing your life immediately, change your ATTITUDE. No matter what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen, we get to choose our attitude. A positive, healthy attitude is your gift to yourself, and frankly, a gift to others. This is not being phony. This is not being unrealistic. This is about achieving what you want out of your life.  You reap what you sow.

Are you uncertain of what type of attitude you have? Here is a way to test it out. Think about how people generally react to you. Do they seem bright, positive, and cheerful? Do they avoid you? Do they seem as if they are walking on pins and needles? That will generally tell you how people view your attitude. Many of you are probably saying, “This is just how I am” or “That’s on them if they can’t deal with me.” Alright then, here is another way to test it out. Ask the next ten people that you interact with about your attitude. These individuals should be people that you have interacted with previously.

Some of you are probably saying, “I am a realist.” I wake up with real expectations for the day. What are those real expectations? Do you just react to whatever comes or do you expect great things to happen to you throughout the day. It works like this; great attitude, great results; average attitude, average results; poor attitude, poor results. A poor attitude becomes a magnet for unpleasant experiences. If you take the attitude that you cannot do something, then you probably will not do it. Start with an attitude of failure and you are defeated before you start. Often I see my friends and colleagues posting about how long the day is going to be.  Inevitably, the day will be long because that is what they wanted and expected.

Successful people in life expect to succeed. When you find an organization or individual producing outstanding results, often you will find a person with a positive attitude towards life. These people do not dwell on setbacks or failures, they move right along. They understand that worrying is a complete waste of time and is the negative use of a creative imagination.

Spend the next seven days (30 days would be better) focusing on having a positive, healthy attitude. Treat every person as the most important person in the world. As far as the person is concerned they are. Many of us talk to people as if we are more important, smarter, and superior to them.

As you practice this positive, healthy attitude make sure you assist yourself with reminders. It is easy to fall back into our old system of “farming” negative thoughts. If you need to, place notes everywhere. Set reminders on your digital devices. Send emails to yourself.

One thing that I tell my students is “A negative attitude does not produce positive results.” My life is better for this and I know yours can be too. The most important thing you can do daily is to have a positive attitude.

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” –Zig Ziglar
